Blade Chimera is a masterful blend of nostalgia and innovation. It channels the spirit of IGA’s legendary works while carving out its own identity with fluid combat, seamless exploration, and a striking cyberpunk Osaka brought to life in vivid pixel art. More than a love letter to the genre, it’s a bold new chapter that stands tall on its own.

NookGaming: 9 / 10 by Andrew Camac

Having played other titles from Team Ladybug, I had a feeling that Blade Chimera was going to be good, but I wasn’t expecting it to forcibly inject its way into being one of my favorite Metroidvania titles of all time. A good (albeit rather clichéd) story perfectly carried by a bloody trio of fantastic combat, smooth and responsive controls, and some of the smoothest sprite work I’ve ever seen in my life creates an almost perfect storm for fans of the genre and those tempted to dip their toes in.

  • Combat Mechanics: The combat is engaging and fluid, with a variety of weapons (melee and ranged) and unique mechanics involving the demon sword companion, Lux. Players appreciate the ability to mix and match weapons and strategies.
  • Soundtrack: The music is described as catchy and fitting for the game, enhancing the overall experience.
  • Exploration and Fast Travel: The game features a generous fast travel system, allowing players to teleport to almost any previously visited area, which reduces backtracking and enhances exploration.

  • Difficulty: The game is generally considered easy, with many bosses not posing a significant challenge. Some players express a desire for more difficult encounters.
  • Linear Level Design: While some enjoy the straightforward map layout, others criticize it for lacking the complex exploration and backtracking typically associated with Metroidvania games.
  • Side Quests: Many side quests are described as repetitive and lacking depth, often involving simple "kill x enemies" tasks that do not contribute meaningfully to the story or gameplay.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to s

  • More Exploration Mechanics: Players express a desire for traditional Metroidvania elements, such as finding movement upgrades scattered throughout the map rather than unlocking abilities through a skill tree.
  • Increased Challenge: A call for a higher difficulty level, particularly for bosses, is common among reviews, with players wanting more challenging gameplay to enhance the experience.
  • Expanded Content: Suggestions for additional content, such as an inverted castle or more side quests with unique rewards, are noted. Players also mention the absence of a New Game+ mode.
  • Improved Inventory Management: Some s find the inventory system cumbersome and wish for better sorting options and more meaningful upgrades in shops.

Summary

  • Overall, while Blade Chimera is celebrated for its visuals, combat, and engaging gameplay, it faces criticism for its length, ease of play, and linearity, with players hoping for more content and challenge in future updates or sequels.
