Release Date: August 18, 2022
Another installment of the legendary series of first-person shooters developed by id Software. The series became very popular mostly thanks to its great and well-balanced multiplayer modes. Quake Champions concentrates on that aspect of the gameplay and lacks a classic campaign mode. Instead, it features dynamic gameplay for many players. The matches are played in a few varied PvP modes.
Quake Champions is the fifth major installment of the legendary Quake series, and the second title of the series, which was designed entirely for multi-player fun. The game was developed primarily for e-sports on PC, and its developers are - as in the case of previous installments - id Software, which has already found its place in the annacles of digital entertainment with titles such as Doom and Wolfenstein.
In of gameplay Quake Champions directly refers to the iconic Quake III: Arena. The players fight dynamic and bloody duels in relatively small arenas, using an arsenal of classic weapons (such as shotgun, rocket launcher or rail gun) and no less classic power-ups. As in the original, the players do not engage in combat with a pre-defined set of weapons but must look for weapons in the nooks and crannies of the levels.
Despite this commitment to tradition, id Software also decided to bring in some innovation. Each playable character has a single special ability that can give the player advantage at a critical moment. For example, Ranger has a portable teleporter, Visor can temporarily see opponents through walls, and Scale Bearer can execute deadly charges. However, victory or defeat is determined primarily by the players' skills - the devs even reward the use of classic techniques such as bunny hopping or rocket jumping (the latter is favored by the vertical construction of levels, with platforms and trampolines).
Quake Champions is powered by id Engine 6, which guarantees nice visuals with relatively low hardware requirements. In addition, the developer boasts 120 Hz gameplay and no limit on the number of animation fps - which is to emphasize the e-sports pedigree of the title.
