Onimusha: Warlords is a remastered version of the classic action game with elements of survival horror, the action of which was set in the 16th century Japan. The producer of the title is Capcom. Originally Onimusha: Warlords was released in 2001 on PlayStation 2 and later on Xbox and PCs. The title was the beginning of the Onimusha series, which for several years since its debut remained reasonably popular, and then quite quickly became forgotten. The first part of the cycle has sold more than two million copies worldwide. The game was originally planned as a spin-off of the Resident Evil cycle, which affected its mechanics of gameplay.

Plot

During their adventure, players move to the 16th-century Japan, which succumbed to war, and play as a samurai named Akechi Samanosuke and a young ninja named Kaede. They both try to save Princess Yuki from the hands of the mysterious demons who attacked the Inabayama Castle. A couple of protagonists soon discover that behind the attack stands the cunning Lord Oda Nobunaga, who was resurrected by demons and plans to sacrifice Yuki in a dark ritual.

The remaster of the first installment of the Onimusha series leaves much to be desired. The main problem is the ugly blurred pre-rendered backgrounds. Now this is no longer a problem thanks to a mod made by a dedicated fan.

While the story isn't out-of-this-world and the gameplay experience has some annoying flaws, Onimusha Warlords is, at the end of the day, a great game and a true classic that deserved to be brought to Xbox One.

Destructoid: 8.5 / 10 by Chris Carter

Capcom could have done more with Onimusha: Warlords, but they didn't screw it up (at least on PS4) and that's all they really needed to do. Given that I still play the original from time to time, I'd say I'm more than happy with a nip and a tuck here and there. Now we just need the full trilogy.

PlayStation LifeStyle: 5 / 10 by Jarrett Green

This remaster seems only well suited for folks who've experienced the series before. It's tailor-made for folks who want to take a trip down memory lane. Even then, you'll find the same surprise I did—that Onimusha: Warlords is a game ed as being better than it actually was.
