A fan has remastered the first Onimusha into 4K
The remaster of the first installment of the Onimusha series leaves much to be desired. The main problem is the ugly blurred pre-rendered backgrounds. Now this is no longer a problem thanks to a mod made by a dedicated fan.

Six years ago, Capcom released Onimusha: Warlords, a remastered version of the first entry in the series bearing the same title. The title improved controls and graphics, but the latter left much to be desired. The developers merely enhanced the visual design slightly, while the backgrounds remained heavily blurred. Now, this can be remedied on PC thanks to the 4K Texture Pack modification.
The project is essentially an unofficial remaster. The creator refreshed both character textures and, most importantly, all prerendered backgrounds. The new versions are made in 4K and offer a significantly higher level of detail. The difference is enormous, and with the mod, Onimusha: Warlords finally looks good on PC.
Of course, an average modder wouldn’t be able to do this manually. Therefore, AI was used. This technology sparks considerable controversy, but remastering old games is the one application for which it is perfectly suited. In many cases, original textures and renders (those created before being converted to low resolutions to fit the capabilities of hardware at the time) have long been lost, and it's not cost-effective to recreate them from scratch. As such, artificial intelligence is often the only way to refresh these elements and bring them up to modern standards.
This is not the first project of this kind. Previously, fans similarly remaster of Myst III: Exile. In both cases, the improvement of prerendered backgrounds is colossal, so we hope that in the future, we will see many other modifications of this type. The new version of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny traditionally will feature blurry locations, making it an excellent candidate for such fan-made AI-enhanced remastering
