Xenoblade Chronicles 3D

Nintendo
Released

Release Date: April 2, 2015

Singleplayer

A 3DS port of Tetsuya Takahashi's jRPG, which was originally released in 2010 for Nintendo Wii. The story is set in dualistic world made of two bodies of gods who fought each other and died in the battle. While one is inhabited by humans, the other is dominated by hostile mechanical beings. The story focuses on a young orphan called Shulk, who, along with his team, is trying to prepare humanity for the incoming enemy.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is a conversion of the famous Xenoblade jRPG game created by Monolith Software for the Wii console. Tetsuya Takahashi, known from the Xenosaga series, also took part in the work on the title. The production is dedicated exclusively to the New 3DS pocket (normal and XXL version), which has additional buttons, a second analog knob and slightly more power. Conversion developers, the Monster Games team, decided to take advantage of these benefits to provide handheld s with almost the same handheld game as on Wii. Unfortunately, this has caused considerable inconvenience, as Xenoblade Chronicles 3D does not work with earlier 3DS models.

The main character is the orphaned 18-year-old Shilk, who in the past took part in a war against the Kishin troops who attacked his village. What seems original is the place of action. It takes place on the bodies of two gods who once fought against each other. One body is inhabited by humans, the other by mechanical beings. The storyline tells the story of how people prepare for the attack of an enemy race.

The Jimquisition: 8 / 10 by James Stephanie Sterling

Lacking in much in the way of additions – there's not even any real touch-screen functionality – Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is about as straight a port as you could get on Nintendo's portable console, but as someone who often prefers his roleplaying games in a handheld format, I'm not complaining.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is an excellent port of one of the best RPGs of the last generation. It features an emotive story, strong characterisation and an engaging battle system, which combine with an approach to the genre that still feels fresh and innovative. The fact that you can now experience the game whilst on the go is hugely alluring, and while it may not make a New 3DS an essential purchase, it certainly provides a compelling argument.

IGN: 8.7 / 10 by Jose Otero

Xenoblade Chronicles 3D shrinks an epic RPG into a nifty portable form. Even though the New 3DS' speedier hardware can't make it look quite as good as it does on the Wii, its scope and scale still make it an impressive and deep game that's well suited for play on the go.
