Release Date: August 13, 2020
The second spin-off of the Total War strategy cycle in which players can take part in a conflict known as the Trojan War. In Total War Saga: Troy we can lead the army of the title city or the Greek army attacking it. The game created by Creative Assembly studio features eight famous heroes, headed by Achilles and Ulysses.
Total War Saga: Troy is the second spin-off of the Thrones of Britannia, developed by Creative Assembly studio. The source of inspiration for this strategy game was primarily the epic Iliad by Homer.
Total War Saga: Troy was set in the Bronze Age, or more precisely, during the conflict known as the Trojan War, the root of which was the kidnapping of Helena, the Queen of Sparta, by the Prince Paris. This was the beginning of a battle in which, under the walls of Troy, the defenders clashed with the Greek army, and the heroes fought for eternal glory. Players can opt for one side and try to lead it to victory.
As it was the case in the previous games of the Creative Assembly studio, the gameplay in Total War Saga: Troy has two planes. The first one is a strategic map, on which the subsequent moves are made in turn-based mode. It is here that we manage our empire on a macro scale, taking care of the economy of our regions (based on raw materials such as food, wood, stone, bronze and gold) and trading with allies, establishing more or less friendly diplomatic relations with other parties or finally conquering new territories.
The second plane is real-time battles on land and at sea, in which we take direct control of our troops. During the former, we must rely primarily on the infantry, and the differences between its types are now more perceptible than ever. In addition, our troops' combat efficiency is also affected by the ground; for example, mud can significantly slow down heavily armoured soldiers, while for lightly armed warriors, crossing the muddy terrain is not a major problem, while tall grass effectively covers the snatching specialist units.
At the same time, the developers tried to make sure that behind the mythological "environment" there were as realistic assumptions as possible. In the game, there are individuals who refer to myths that are not monsters or heroes with supernatural abilities; in the case of Minotaur, for example, who can also be sent into battle, there is a tall, muscular warrior dressed in a helmet in the shape of a bull's head, spreading fear among opponents. Heroes known from Homer's epic are at the forefront of eight camps, which we are using during the game. On the Greek side, there is the brave Achilles, for example, whose temperament can be a problem if his troops fail. Hector, the Prince of Troy, is, in turn, earnestly rewarded by King Priam as soon as he manages to complete his task before his brother Paris.
When playing, the favor of the deities also plays an important role, the faith in which brings our army various bonuses. For example, Ares, as the god of war, provides our warriors with greater combat efficiency, Poseidon, the god of the seas and oceans, facilitates clashes on the water, and Aphrodite contributes to the development of the economy.
Games under the Total War sign have grown accustomed to high quality graphics. Things are no different in the case of Total War Saga: Troy - the individual units are full of detail and the environment is detailed. Also noteworthy is the strategic map, which initially evokes associations with antique paintings, but as more and more areas are discovered, it becomes more realistic.

Game Ratings for Total War Saga: Troy Video Game.
Wccftech: 9 / 10 by Chris Wray
With a focused approach, looking at the Trojan War, Total War Saga: Troy offers you the choice between following the story of the war or forging your own path, each time feeling different. This is enhanced by unique game mechanics for each faction within the game, though there are sadly a limited number, as well as adding mechanics that all factions work with like the favour of gods. This is backed up by a brilliant resource and city-management system, making this one of the more strategic Total War titles out there. There are some flaws, such as agents mostly feeling useless and a few small niggles with diplomacy and allied AI, but these are outshone by the aforementioned positives and a fantastically tactical combat system due to enhanced units and new terrain, as well as mythical units. Put simply, Total War Saga: Troy is an outstanding first entry from Creative Assembly Sofia and a fantastic entry to the Total War franchise, highlighting what the Saga spin-offs can bring.
Metro GameCentral: 7 / 10
If you play it for free this is an excellent introduction to the concept of Total War, but as a paid-for product it's a sometimes awkward mix of fact and fiction, old problems and new.
GamingTrend: 80 / 100 by Ron Burke
Total War Saga: Troy is a step in an interesting direction. The "Saga" distinction allows the team to try some new concepts without disturbing the main franchise, and it does while remaining faithful to the historic roots of its predecessors, with a dash of the fantastical. Some technical wobbles remain, and the game can be occasionally obtuse, but there's a lot to enjoy here.
