The Terminator for PC DOS is the first computer adaptation of James Cameron's 1984 movie. The game was created by Bethesda Softworks, an American company known at the time mainly for sports games such as Wayne Gretzky Hockey or NCAA: Road to the Final Four.
The plot of The Terminator refers directly to the original movie. During the game, we can play as one of the two rivals. Playing as Kyle Reese, our task is to protect Sarah Connor, the mother of the future savior of humanity, who is followed by the cyborg sent from the future. As Terminator, our task is to accomplish our mission and kill Sarah and her protector.
Released in 1990, The Terminator is one of the first video games set in the open world. In this first-person action game, we move freely through the streets of Los Angeles, tracking the opponent, buying or stealing weapons and other equipment, and avoiding police patrols. Although the aim of the game is clearly defined for each of the protagonists, it is also possible to complete various side activities that don't have a direct impact on the plot. We can, for example, devote ourselves to exploring different corners of the city or steal cars and use them to move around Los Angeles faster.
The Terminator on DOS PC offers simple yet full 3D vector graphics in 320x200 resolution and 16-bit colour palette. The action is observed from the first-person perspective and almost half of the screen is occupied by the HUD, which displays various tips, a map, available weapons, and ammunition.
