Sleep Awake is a psychological horror. It is the result of an unusual collaboration between Cory Davis (director of Spec Ops: The Line) and Robin Finck from the music band Nine Inch Nails. The game was created by the independent Californian studio Eyes Out.
Sleep Awake transports us to the fictional city of Squeeze, where the inhabitants have started to disappear in their sleep. This phenomenon was dubbed the Silence, and its consequence was the outbreak of widespread panic. Some began to conduct dangerous experiments on themselves aimed at preventing them from falling asleep, while others became followers of death cults.
The main character of the game is Katja, who finds herself in the middle of this chaos. The protagonist's goal is to escape with her life, deal with the nightmares from her past, and come to with the loss of her family.
In Sleep Awake we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). The game takes us to a world suspended between two dimensions - physical and immaterial, which is presented through disturbing, psychedelic visual effects that we can experience.
While exploring locations, we solve various puzzles, and also have to deal with opponents. The female protagonist is most often forced to hide from enemies, and when she is detected, she must save herself by escaping. Additional variety is provided by FMV sequences, which we watch during the game.
