The action of the game takes place a few years after the events shown in the original.

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms is a representative of the hack'n'slash species with isometric view. This production is a continuation of Cult: Heretic Kingdoms - a title created by 3D People studio in 2004 (although in many parts of the world, also in Poland, it debuted in 2005). Over the years, the brand care went into the hands of new owners, so for the creation of Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms is responsible for Games Farm studio and the German publisher of bitComposer Games.

Story

Events told in Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms take place a few years after those we witnessed in the original released a decade earlier. However, the sequel tells a completely new story that is not directly related to the previous game. The heretical kingdoms of the title are plunged into chaos, and the only chance to save them from praise through the darkness is to use the power and potential of the souls of the greatest heroses that have stood on the ground years ago.

Therefore, the only being able to save the world and at the same time the main protagonist of the production is the demon known as Devourer. His special abilities are the ability to wander between two dimensions - the real and the shadow world - and to devour souls of dead beings in order to take control of them.

Mechanics

Such conceptual assumptions make the game give us the illusion of directing the team - although the protagonist is one, at a given moment we can control the demon itself in its pure form or take the form of one of the three selected beings from the pool of those who are in the power of the Devourer. So on the screen we don't see four characters at once - each soul shares a body with a demon, so the change of a directed hero (which can happen at any time) simply means turning into someone else.

Each captivating soul represents a hero with unique qualities and skills, whose development takes place independently of the other of the "team". The speed of gaining experience points depends on how much time we spend in a given body. There is a large pool of souls waiting for the player, from which you can form a "accompanying" protagonist in a given moment three - the demon can share the body with the souls of both good and righteous heroes, as well as rogues or even monsters.

Also the second ability of the Devourer - the ability to move between the two plans of existence - translates in a significant way into the mechanics of the game. Being able to jump into the world of shadows, we surprise our opponents to increase their chances of winning, avoid pitfalls, and more easily solve logical puzzles.

Technical issues

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms shows the action in isometric view. Graphic design is three-dimensional and although it does not present the highest level that can be found among modern games, it is aesthetic and, in addition, skillfully emphasizes the dark character of the world presented.
