Remaster of the underrated classic of the jRPG genre developed by Square Enix. The game takes the player to a planetary system called Regions, where magic intertwines with technology. We play as eight heroes, each of whom has a separate story.
SaGa Frontier Remastered is a refreshed version of the underrated classic for the first PlayStation, Kingdom Hearts. The re-release improves the game in many ways and brings back elements removed from the base game.
The action of SaGa Frontier takes place in a system of planets called The Regions. Each of the worlds located there has a different culture and is inhabited by different races. In the presented universe player encounters both magic and technology.
The structure of the game is similar to Octopath Traveler, also published by Square Enix. Instead of one long campaign, the game features eight scenarios that are different in of plot and characters. Each scenario offers a different protagonist and a completely different atmosphere. For example, the young mage Blue is tasked with mastering the secrets of magic to sur his brother's skills. Model Emilia is framed for the murder of her fiancé and embarks on a personal crusade to find the real killer. Red, on the other hand, is a superhero fighting the terrorist organisation responsible for his family's death. Although the characters often meet each other by accident, they do not permanently forces, and each scenario acts as a separate campaign. The remaster also brings back an eighth scenario, removed from the base game due to lack of time during the development process. Its protagonist is the interplanetary law enforcement officer Fuse.
The combat system in SaGa Frontier is turn-based, and allows the player to control a team of five. During the fight we can attack, use items and magic. Quite a unique element is the presence of LP, or life points. Despite their name, they are quite a different statistic from health points, and play the role of endurance. More powerful techniques cost us a certain number of LP. If the hero's LP are exhausted, he will not be able to take part in battle until he rests in an inn. The system forces us to be cautious in battle and to save resources. The remaster changes the interface to a more accessible one and adds the possibility of accelerating skirmishes.
The game features a non-linear structure. Almost the entire game world is open to us from the very beginning. Depending on the choices we make, the recruited team and the chosen protagonist, different events await us. The game also contains many side missions, which can be undertaken by each of the characters.
SaGa Frontier Remastered features only single-player mode.
The graphic style of Remastered is very similar to the original version of the game. The characters are represented by 2D sprites on pre-rendered backgrounds. However, all sprites and backgrounds have been re-created in HD quality, making the game pleasing to the eye.

When you take the time to explore, you’ll find a surreal, beautiful game waiting for you. But, again, SaGa Frontier does an absolutely terrible job of making this clear. Fortunately, SaGa Frontier Remastered takes much of the frustration out of this. You can save anywhere, and there’s an autosave, you can speed up movement in the overworld and battles too. This is the best way to experience an often overlooked masterpiece, and I hope that SaGa Frontier 2 gets a similar treatment in the future.

SaGa Frontier Remastered has great upgrades that positively add to the original gameplay experience, especially if you loved this title back in the late 90s. If you have never played this, it might seem like an overwhelmingly difficult game with a mess of great ideas that had not been completely sorted out. It was certainly ahead of its time and groundbreaking in some areas of gameplay.

Still marching to the beat of its own drum, SaGa Frontier Remastered is an example of a remaster done right. The oddity and creativity of the original has been excellently preserved, while the new additions and improved visuals round out the package.
