Roots of Yggdrasil is a city builder strategy game, with roguelike elements. It was developed by ManaVoid Entertainment, an indie studio.
Roots of Yggdrasil takes us on a journey to a fantastic world inspired by Norse mythology. Ragnarok has come to an end, the gods have fallen, and the titular Yggdrasil, or World Tree, has been destroyed. All that remains of the nine worlds are shards that float freely in space, swallowed up one by one by the ominous darkness called Ginnungagap.
In the course of the game, we take control of a Viking tribe that has been trapped in a kind of loop. The group travels from shard to shard, erects more headquarters on them, and then escapes to the next patch of land, so as not to fall prey to the darkness approaching with every second. In this way, our Vikings gradually bring the roots of Yggdrasil back to life, hoping to eventually break the cycle and rebuild the destroyed world.
In Roots of Yggdrasil we observe the action from a top-down view. In the course of the game, we are engaged in acquiring resources and erecting settlements on successive pieces of nine worlds. As we progress, we get to know successive inhabitants of particular lands; meetings with them not only deepen our knowledge of the presented world, but can also influence our play style.
As we play, we are constantly threatened by the prospect of the imminent arrival of Ginnungagap, so haste is advisable here. Acquiring resources and building villages must be done quickly, so that our tribe manages to escape before it comes within reach of the greedy darkness. Since the successive shards we come across are procedurally generated, it's impossible to find two identical maps here.
Graphics in Roots of Yggdrasil is made in a colorful, cartoonish style.
