Release Date: March 28, 2017
A hybrid of a platform and a survival game. The title was developed by two people – Joar Lisberg Jakobsson was the lead programmer and the author of the idea of the game while the music was composed by James Primate. The game takes place in a hostile post-industrial realm filled with complicated machinery. The environment is constantly plagued by downpours and the animals that live in it are forced to hide from the rain in a hibernated state.
Rain World for PC and PS4 is a platform survival game with old school graphics in which the player assumes the role of a cat-like creature. Slugcat, as the protagonist is called, is an agile creature that tries to survive in the hostile, post-industrial Rain World. The game was created by only two people – the lead programmer and author of the idea of the game Joar Jakobsson and James Primate who composed the music. The latter is the composer of the music to a few other independent games, including Gnomoria.
The game takes place in the Rain World – a hostile realm filled with empty spaces and deactivated machines. During most of the time the area is under heavy and destructive rainfall. This makes surviving in this sad place very hard. The animals that inhabit this world are hibernated and hidden in various holes and crannies during the rain. When the area becomes dry, these weird creatures resurface. The player assumes the role of one of such creatures – Slugcat, a cat-like creature which is trying to hunt enough food to survive the next hibernation period. The problem is that creatures larger that Slugcat have similar plans. This makes the player both the hunter and the prey.
Gameplay of PC and PS4 version of Rain World is focused on careful exploration of the hostile world, climbing on obstacles, avoiding dangers and, if needed, fighting encountered enemies. While traveling through the levels, the player will not only use the natural agility of Slugcat, but also a primitive spear that allows killing or stunning dangerous enemies.
Rain World offers a singleplayer mode. It also contains various cooperation modes for up to four players.
The graphics of the game, despite being simple and inspired by classic 16-bit games, looks quite good. The color palette underlines the post-industrial atmosphere of game world. The dry, electronic background music fits the tune of the title as well.

Game Ratings for Rain World Video Game.
God is a Geek: 4 / 10 by Dan Murphy
Sadly, despite its pretty aesthetic, Rain World is a confusing and sluggish platformer that failed to give me any reason for what I was doing and just left me feeling bored and bewildered.
TechRaptor: 6 / 10 by Luigi Savinelli
Rain World is a charming and beautiful game held back by its overly punishing gameplay. Imprecise controls and cheap deaths contribute in making this survival platformer way more frustrating than it needs to be.
GameCrate: 5.8 / 10 by David Sanchez
Rain World will probably establish a cult following, which is great because it deserves a fan base for its thoughtful ideas. Unfortunately, too many factors get in the way of what very well could've been one of 2017's most interesting indies.
