The fourth part of the series of economic strategies, in which our task is to create an economic empire on the islands of the seventeenth-century Caribbean. The player must produce goods, establish trade relations with cities and command ships in turn-based battles.
Port Royale 4 is the fourth installment of the economic strategy series. The project was developed by Gaming Minds Studios, a team that developed such titles as Port Royale 3: Pirates & Merchants, Patrician IV, Rise of Venice and Railway Empire.
The action of the game is set in the 17th century in the Caribbean. We play as governor of a small settlement whose goal is to create an empire that includes many islands. Port Royale 4 focuses on the economic aspect. We can build fifty types of buildings, half of which are structures used for the production of various types of goods. The player must develop the economy and learn how to balance expenditure and investment.
The key role in the game is played by trade, in which we can conduct business with 60 cities. We transport goods by sea, so it is very important to create routes that avoid dangerous areas such as cliffs and shallows. The weather also influences the voyages of ships. All this is done in real-time.
In addition to economic development, we also command sailing ships during tactical sea battles, which for the first time in the history of the series are played in turn-based mode. In the game, you will find 18 types of ships, modeled on authentic ships from the 17th century.
Port Royale 4 offers four story campaigns in which we work with England, Spain, the Netherlands, and . Each of these nations has different characteristics and conditions, which influence the game.
The devs did not prepare a multiplayer mode.
The game offers nice three-dimensional visuals. Port Royale 4 is built on the Gaming Minds studio's proprietary engine, an enhanced version of Railway Empire technology.

GameSpace: 6.5 / 10 by Catherine Daro
Port Royale 4 is a big game that puts all of its eggs into one basket: trading. This leaves other parts such as building and sea combat very basic for such an involved title. If you are into min-maxing and being on top of a great many things to keep your trading empire the best version of itself, you will have a blast in PR4. However, if you are someone who generally likes strategies and wants to have a good time conquering the 17th-century Caribbean, you might get bored due to the lack of other activities to pursue.
Wccftech: 6.5 / 10 by Chris Wray
Port Royale 4 is a solid trading and building management sim. The improved visuals, as well as some improved mechanics, help set this apart, as does the tactical turn-based ship combat. It's very -friendly and intuitive, particularly with the city building and trade-route creating aspects. However, it isn't without flaws. Side quests feel very repetitive and don't really give you enough to do and the campaign can be too rigid, not giving you the amount of time you'd need to do anything other than the bare minimum for the tasks set. If you like this sort of game, Port Royale 4 is likely just up your alley, but I can't see it converting anybody to the cause.

There’s a lot of layers to Port Royale 4. Its gameplay is impressively deep, and to truly succeed at it, you need to excel at multitasking and strategising. Like any sim game, it’s not something that just anybody is going to enjoy. But if you are a fan of deep simulation games, there’s a lot to love here.
