A dynamic action RPG addressed to mature players. The game focuses on combat, character development, collecting inventory, and exploration of its world. The emphasis was put on adjusting the mechanics and the storyline to the individual style of play of each player.

Tomasz Gop, co-creator of The Witcher, was involved in development. Shortly after the release of the second Witcher, he left the ranks of CD Projekt RED. Gop served as the executive producer and designed the gameplay mechanics in detail as well as the overall concept of the game. A large portion of the project was finished by a German studio, Deck 13

The world of the game is an ancient one where, thousands of years ago, the mankind rebelled against the tyranny of its god and managed to kill him. His body gradually changed into a mountain range that separates the north, inhabited by a civilization mage-priests, from the south which is the home of warriors.

Lords of the Fallen Review: Lighter and More Accessible Dark Souls

While reviewing Lords of the Fallen there is no way to avoid comparison to Dark Souls. Luckily it's still pretty solid action RPG.

RPG

The first DLC for Lords of the Fallen, a third-person action RPG developed by the Polish studio CI Games in cooperation with Deck 13. The expansion introduces a completely new location—the eponymous maze that exists between the worlds of humans and demons. The protagonist, Harkyn, encounters the immortal representatives of the latter and decides to deal with them for good. In practice, it means that we will explore new mysterious places full of various secrets and previously unknown types of enemies. Fighting them, the protagonist uses new items (including weapons and armor) that prove useful especially during the final boss battle against a powerful demon that possesses the ability of dynamically switching his powers. The expansion features numerous side quests and logic puzzles to solve.

All told, this is a reasonably good first effort and a worthy attempt to imitate and iterate on one of the finest games of the last generation. Lords of the Fallen will hopefully be commercially successful enough to lead to a sequel or, better still, a more ambitious and more unique project from Deck 13/CI Games that builds off this game rather than simply tacks on to it.

Eurogamer: 7 / 10 by Dan Whitehead

I just wish it wasn't so happy to sit in another game's shadow, and made more of the few fresh mechanisms that might distinguish it and move the genre forwards. Instead, it hews so closely to a proven template that it's basically a pretty good action-adventure by default. Yet as the game clock ticked towards 20 hours and beyond, I could never quite shake the feeling that I'd still rather be failing in Dark Souls than succeeding in Lords of the Fallen.
