Karma. Incarnation 1 for PC, iOS and AND is a point’n’click adventure developed by Russian independent studio AuraLab. Published by Other Kind Games, this is a debut project for this team.
Plot
In Karma. Incarnation 1 the player takes control over Pip whose goal is to save his abducted beloved from evil spirits. The only way to accomplish that is to transform into a powerful dragon and to set off into the mysterious world of spirits in order to face the ancient Evil. Unfortunately, something went wrong and the hero’s soul turned into a worm, which enormously complicated the whole endeavour. The story is non-linear and the choices the player makes influence the way it unfolds and ends.
Mechanics
Gameplay in Karma. Incarnation 1 is observed from the side-view. Exploration of the psychedelic environment, completing different quests from NPCs, and solving numerous puzzles are key elements of the title. The protagonist has an original ability called Astral Sight which enables him to peek into the world of spirits – using it gives you not only hints for solving particular puzzles, but also unlocks ages unavailable otherwise.
The special system of the titular Karma constantly evaluates your behaviour – the decisions you make and things you do are reflected in the hero’s appearance and the way NPCs respond to him. Taking different decisions means following different plot branches and experiencing one specific story ending, out of many others.
Technical aspects
What makes Karma. Incarnation 1 published on PC, iOS and AND stand out from the crowd is the original, 2D, hand-drawn animation style. Both the world and its inhabitants are bizarre and intriguing – the contrast between simple character projects and psychedelic, colourful backgrounds is especially interesting. Carefully-created sounds along with the soundtrack composed by ZMEIRADUGA band let you sink into the title even more deeply.
