Release Date: October 11, 2019
Platformer with elements of an adventure game in which we follow the fate of three characters - a knight devoted to the forces of darkness, a creature feeding on pain and a lonely girl. Inmost gameplay varies depending on which of the heroes we play at a given moment - while the knight may face nightmarish adversaries, the others have to avoid confrontation with them or lure them directly into a trap.
Inmost is a platform game enriched with certain elements typical for adventure games. The game described herein was developed by an independent studio Hidden Layer Games - a two-person team based in Lithuania - and published by Chucklefish.
Inmost tells the story of three characters - a knight devoted to the forces of darkness, a being feeding on pain, and a lonely girl. Their fates are intertwined, creating a dark story taking place across two worlds.
In Inmost, players observe the action from the side perspective. On their adventure, players travel through gloomy locations, some of which include in an old, dark castle. Exploration is diversified not only by secret ages waiting to be discovered and environmental riddles to be solved, but also by deadly traps and opponents straight from nightmares. Depending on which hero we play at a given moment, we have to avoid confrontation with the enemies, lure them directly into a snare or as a knight - face them, making use of melee weapons.
Inmost has 2D pixel-art visuals. The whole experience has been kept in a dark style, which was achieved through gloomy location designs and matching opponents to the shadows, as well as scarce colors.

Inmost could be the very definition of a hidden gem. It is probably too niche and maudlin to connect with a wider audience, but one would suspect that those it does connect with will find it to be a unique and affecting experience. It's short and not a difficult undertaking to get through, but it does do just enough to get the grey matter moving, and rewards consistently with those congratulatory "aha!" moments or aforementioned set-pieces. This really defines itself with a dark atmosphere and filmic quality, even if that's hard to imagine a 2D aesthetic doing. It has an auteur's mark on it, which leaves an impression, and makes Hidden Layers Games, Alexey Testov and Andriy Vinchovskiy ones to watch out for in future.
New Game Network: 71 / 100 by Kiran Manan
INMOST is by no means the most original game, but players who appreciate simply being absorbed into a beautiful, frightening setting should enjoy it. The world is small but densely packed with details that truly conjure the feeling of exploring a shadowy realm by the light of the moon.
WayTooManyGames: 7.5 / 10 by Leonardo Faria
Inmost is the rare case of a really good game that intentionally tries to be discomforting and uneasy due to its themes. I liked its visuals, level structure, and sound design, but it’s hard for me to actively recommend it. It’s just way too downtrodden and depressing in a way that it almost demotivates you to play it for long.
