Atomfall is a survival action game inspired by Cold War paranoia, British folk horror, and science fiction works such as Day of the Triffids. The game was developed by the Rebellion studio, known primarily for the Sniper Elite series.

Plot

Atomfall refers to the Windscale fire - a nuclear disaster of 1957, when the core of one of the nuclear reactors built near the village of Seascale (Great Britain) spontaneously ignited, leading to radioactive contamination of the entire area. In the alternative version of this story presented by the authors of the game, the consequences of this event were much more serious than they were in reality.

In the game world, the disaster site was surrounded by a quarantine zone similar to the Chornobyl's Exclusion Zone. Within five years of these events, the military-controlled area had changed beyond recognition, and the people living there began to form smaller communities, creating factions that fought bloody conflicts among themselves. Our task is to unravel the mystery behind all these events.

Atomfall Review: A union jack of all trades

Combat, stealth, and even exploration could have been handled better, sure, but Atomfall’s themes, atmosphere, and story make for a solid game that lets you forgive some of these issues if you let it.

GamingBolt: 8 / 10 by Shubhankar Parijat

Atomfall concocts an engrossing story in a world full of intrigue and whimsy, while delivering a gameplay experience that is defined by strong world design, rewarding exploration, and an impressive emphasis on player agency. Utterly gorgeous and wonderfully eccentric, Rebellion's post-nuclear dystopia is well worth checking out, even with some issues in combat and stealth.

GameGrin: 8.5 / 10 by Dylan Pamintuan

Atomfall reminded me why I fell in love with open-world RPGs in the first place, offering the freedom to do what you want, but deal with the consequences of such. It'll be a struggle to survive, but it is worth it all in the end.

Push Square: 8 / 10 by Liam Croft

Atomfall commits to embodying everything it means to be British, and it comes out the other side all the better for it. The mystery at the heart of the alternate 1960s setting is gripping, forever teasing clues and solutions to a way out of its rural quarantine zone. Its combat systems and mechanics let the experience down, but Rebellion's latest peaks when it makes you the countryside's Inspector Gadget with a bunch of Leads to pursue and villagefolk to suspect.

The main cons of the game

  • Gameplay Mechanics: Many players criticize the combat, particularly melee mechanics, as clunky and unrefined. Stealth mechanics are also deemed ineffective, with enemies spotting players too easily.

  • Inventory Management: Players report issues with limited inventory space and cumbersome looting mechanics, which detract from the overall experience.
  • Story Execution: While the story has potential, many feel it lacks closure and depth, with various plot threads left unanswered.

  • Character Development: Players express a desire for more character backstory and depth, as well as more engaging NPC interactions.
  • Crafting Depth: Although crafting exists, many players feel that it lacks meaningful utility and variety, with too many resources and not enough worthwhile items to create.
