A Blind Legend is a unique action adventure game for PC, AND and iOS. The plot and mechanics are based solely on sounds. The production is addressed mainly to blind players but also those who seek completely new experiences in gaming. The title was developed by the French DOWiNO in cooperation with Culture, a radio station. The development was funded thanks to a fundraiser campaign at ULULE, a French crowdfunding platform, as well as donations from state institutions and non-profit organizations. The game is free for mobile devices, while the PC, AND and iOS version is a paid application.
The plot of A Blind Legend is set in a medieval fantasy setting, and we assume the role of a blind knight named Edward Blake who tries to free his wife from unknown captors. Accompanied by his daughter, Louise, the protagonist traverses the kingdom of High Castle, facing various enemies and traps.
A Blind Legend is one of few games in its genre. Its uniqueness is defined by the fact that it bases solely on sounds—while playing, the players use only their hearing. We are constantly accompanied by intensive auditory sensations such as the rustle of trees, birds singing, footsteps, and clashes of arms. The protagonist’s daughter is a kind of a facility since her voice points us the way and gives all the necessary hints. Basing on the heard sounds, our intuition, and Louise’s prompts, the blind Edward Blake can not only move but also fight his opponent with a sword and a shield and even perform combos. The controls involve making adequate gestures on a touchscreen (in case of mobile devices) or with a mouse (in case of PCs).
In accordance with the concept of a sound game, A Blind Legend for PC, AND and iOS does not offer any graphics. In game, the screen of our tablet or monitor is filled with subtle smoke which serves as a screensaver, while the player has to rely solely on his gearing. The production of DOWiNO utilizes the modern binaural sound technology which enables to locate the source of a sound as faithfully as possible. Thanks to this, we can feel as if we were actually inside the game world.
