State of Play confirms Borderlands 4 will be more Borderlands

Today's State of Play was focused on the Borderlands 4. Overall, it looks like more Borderlands, which may not be exciting, but it's not a bad thing.

Today, Gearbox shared Grand Theft Auto 6, or any other game. Today’s Borderlands 4 State of Play introduced new characters, mechanics, features, and, of course, guns, but ultimately looks like another game in the long-running series, even if it’s the best looking of them all.

During the Borderlands 4 State of Play, there was a clear emphasis on movement abilities. Several of the characters featured in the State of Play were able to float into the air, glide, and one even had a ground pound attack. Borderlands 4 will introduce grapple hooks to launch up to higher areas as well as to grab items like explosive barrels and hurl them at enemies. But that’s not all. Players will each have a personal vehicle that can be summoned from anywhere, not just from specific locations. You can watch the entire State of Play on PlayStation’s YouTube channel.

One of the most notable differences during this State of Play was the lack of the usual Borderlands shenanigans. I only noticed one humorous moment, when the narrator mentioned the return of Claptrap, to which the robot everyone loves to hate responded with: “Bummer.” Other than that, it would have been easy to mistake a glimpse of this gameplay deep dive for something else. Of course, when a crazy gun fires acid or one of the iconic masked psychos appears on screen, it’s hard to mistake. But when the player is grappling up a cliff or jumping on a sci-fi hoverbike, it could easily blend in with many other popular shooter games on the market right now.

The four new vault hunters, who serve as the playable character options, look like fun. This State of Play focused on two of them: Vex the Siren and Rafa the Ex-Soldier. Vex was shown able to use “phase energy” to blast enemies, empower herself, and summon various allies (including a grim reaper and a sabretooth tiger). Meanwhile, Rafa seems somewhat more straightforward, using “an experimental exo-suit capable of digistructing an arsenal of weapons.” Not quite sure what that means but it’s probably cool. You can read more details from the PlayStation.Blog.

Borderlands 4 looks great. The classic cel-shaded art style is back. The option to combine parts of various guns sounds like a great way to build on the ludicrous types of guns this series is famous for. It’s easy to see myself jumping into this game with some friends when it launches in September, but this State of Play hasn’t shown anything that makes me think this will be much more than what I’ve already played from this popular series. This isn’t going to be anything revolutionary, but it will probably still be fun.
