Quake Live no longer a free-to-play game, players’ statistics wiped clean
Quake Live is no longer a free-to-play game. Since the latest update the title can be bought on Steam for $10. The update also moved Quake Live to Steamworks, resulting in deleting all players’ data.

The latest Quake Live update on Steam did something no one had expected. This beloved old-school FPS is no longer a free-to-play title. Instead, the entry cost is now $10. Well, those who already had the game in their Steam Library do not have to pay, but they too have a reason to by upset, as all player’s statistics, friend lists, clans, names, etc. were wiped clean. That means several years’ worth of efforts gone in a blink of an eye. Obviously, fans got furous, expressing their emotions on Steam forums.
What the update actually does is fully integrate Quake Live with Steamworks, using its Friends, Chat, Lobbies, Voice Chat, Server Browser, Statistics, Achievements, Anti-cheat, Trading Cards, and Workshop – the developers explained in Steam News. Unfortunately, that means all player’s progress had to be removed and is not coming back. The transition also resulted in giving all players equal access to the game’s content, bringing foregoing subscriptions to an end.
Quake Live existed as a free-to-play PC online shooter for over 6 years. In early 2014 it dropped browser environment for a game client, and later, in September 2014 launched on Steam. All this time Quake Live offered a free model with optional subscriptions. Not any more.
