Netflix to create The Witcher TV series
Instead of a Witcher movie fans will get a full-blooded TV series, developed and produced by Netflix. Is it going to be the new Game of Thrones?
Great news for all fans of The Witcher universe: the original book saga is going to get a full-blooded TV series produced by Netflix. The show is to be developed in collaboration with Polish visual effects company Platige Image (creators of the stunning trailers for 2) and Tomasz Baginski (known for Oscar-nominated short The Cathedral, BAFTA-winning The Fallen Art, and Ambition), who is going o direct at least one episode of each season. Other executve producers are Sean Daniel (The Mummy franchise, Ben-Hur, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) as well as Jarek Sawko (The Fallen Art, Another Day of Life).
Contrary to what he thinks about the video games, the author of the books, Andrzej Sapkowski, is quite excited about the TV series and will serve as its creative consultant. Sapkowski was quoted in the official press note:
I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.
The series is going to be based on the novels about Geralt of Rivia, telling the stories of the witcher’s early adventures and first encounters with characters whom many of you know from the games, including Yennefer and Ciri. At the same time, Platige Films is halting the works on the previously announced movie. A TV series instead of a feature film? That’s fair enough.
