Today, a highly anticipated, graphically beautiful game announced that it is being delayed to 2026. No, it’s not a stunning cinematic released over a year ago. No gameplay yet. I would have been shocked if this game were still expected to be released within the next seven months. Thankfully, many fans have similar reactions to this news.

Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra officially delayed to early 2026

You may that in March 2024, the internet was abuzz with the Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra announcement trailer. A game starring two of the most iconic Marvel characters in a new setting might have been enough, but this trailer was at least partly revealed to showcase its graphical fidelity. The trailer was shown at the Unreal Engine showcase at that year’s Game Developers Conference. It was not a Game Awards or Summer Game Fest blowout showcase; it was geared more towards showing off technological improvements.

Skydance is a studio primarily known for making movies. They have put out a few smaller titles, some Walking Dead games, and a few original projects, but nothing that has seriously moved the needle. This Marvel game could definitely do that, especially with Uncharted director Amy Hennig at the helm. Games should take their time rather than release in an unfinished state. In the long term, it’s also better for Skydance not to tarnish their reputation in games before they even get started. The main question will be, is this a delay out of caution, or a delay out of necessity? The cinematic trailer looks excellent, but that’s not what makes a good game.

Skydance Games shared the news via a post on social media, explaining, “Taking this additional time will allow us to add more polish, and make sure we give you the best possible experience, and on that lives up to our vision.” This all sounds well and good, but it is also something gamers have heard time and time again. As many of the responses confirm, no one has had their hopes up. One wrote: “I think no one was expecting this game to launch in 2025,” with several others adding “take your time.”

Personally, I would not be surprised if this game is delayed further into 2026. The only way I could be convinced otherwise, and many fans will likely agree, is if we see gameplay sometime this year. Be it at Summer Game Fest next month or another showcase elsewhere. It’s great for a game to look good, but ultimately, it has to be fun to play. In their statement, Skydance Games said, “We have some exciting things in store and look forward to sharing more soon!” So perhaps we won’t have to wait too long to learn more.
