Los Frikis is an unabashedly warm emotional journey based on true events. Is it worth watching? Opinion about the film with Adria Arjona
Los Frikis is making its digital debut and we advise whether the new film starring Adria Arjona from the makers of The Peanut Butter Falcon is worth watching.

Los Frikis is a new movie from the makers of The Peanut Butter Falcon. The filmmakers have taken on a coming-of-age story, this time taking viewers to 1990s Cuba. It depicts the fate of young punk musicians who seek an escape from pervasive restrictions, prohibitions and poverty in their country. In search of freedom, they decide to take a desperate step – deliberately inject HIV to live in a government treatment home, where they can finally taste freedom and discover their paradise on earth.
My review of Los Frikis. I watched the film by Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson last fall at the EnergaCAMERIMAGE film festival and was very impressed. After the screening, I could not forget for a long time the moving story of young people who, fleeing a life of oppression, in an act of desperation decided to pay the ultimate price for freedom. But although the subject matter of this film is heavy, the movie did not lack warmth, tenderness and a sense of some hope in the face of tragic circumstances.
The first part of Los Frikis is brutally striking with its depiction of poverty and oppression, depicting 1990s Cuba. But the second part takes viewers and characters to a kind of utopia for people who rebelled and defied control. They live a life they thought was impossible. And the viewers go with them to a world where being with them brings to mind the vacations of our youth, when we carefree had fun with friends in the sunshine and didn't know if we would see them again after the vacations end and what would happen to us. It was only about the here and now.

Los Frikis is a special film for me, definitely my favorite of 2024. It's a story that stays with you for a long time and gives you a lot to think about life, what we have and what we take for granted, and what is also fragile and not available to everyone. It's a story about growing up in impossible circumstances, in a reality that is hard to put yourself in, but which has been the life of many. Los Frikis is an emotional journey that really gets to you, but that's what movies are all about – that they move, evoke emotions and reveal to people a world they don't know. Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson's film definitely accomplishes this task.
Is Los Frikis worth watching? Yes, definitely yes! Run to watch it as soon as possible.
