BlizzCon 2021 Canceled
This year we won't get a full-fledged edition of BlizzCon either. Blizzard has just canceled the event and is preparing a replacement event for early 2022.
The second year of coronavirus promises to be just as 'joyous' for Blizzard fans as the previous one. This is because the company has canceled BlizzCon 2021. Instead, a hybrid event is planned for early next year, combining online presentations with smaller fan gatherings.
A message published on the company's official website states that the decision is due to the still unclear global situation in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. This makes long-term operations difficult, and Blizzard its that it simply doesn't have the time to hold a traditional BlizzCon anymore:
"Building an in-person BlizzCon is an epic and complex affair that takes many months of preparation—not just for us, but also for the many talented production partners, esports pros, hosts, entertainers, artists, and other collaborators we team up with locally and globally to put all of the pieces together. The ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have impacted our ability to properly move forward on many of these fronts, and ultimately we’re now past the point where we’d be able to develop the kind of event we’d want to create for you in November."
This is the second year in a row that Blizzard has been forced to lay off some of the staff responsible for organizing live events. Apparently, the resignation of a huge event was already being considered at that point.
