After 13 years, ambitious project for beloved Lord of the Rings strategy is finally finished. It's the most complete version of Battle for Middle-earth
A fan of the game Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth has spent more than a decade improving and expanding the strategy. After 13 years, the author's mod with new maps and units has reached its full version.

After 13 years of working on the mod and 21 years since the game's release, we have finally received what is likely the most complete version of the strategy game Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth. The creator known as Rohirim91 has been working on the modification of Middle-earth: Extended Edition since 2012, which both improves and significantly expands the cult RTS. On April 5th of this year, his work finally launched in its full version, giving fans another excuse to return to Middle-earth.
- Highly rated by s, the mod introduces new maps (e.g., Lothlorien, Minas Tirith, and Moria), factions (Elves, Gundabad), and units (Shelob). It also further develops factions already present in the title, such as Rohan and Isengard. Moreover, the project changes many original character models, weapon balance, or production costs.
- Rohirim91 has devoted a lot of time to refining the strategies used by armies and improving artificial intelligence. As a result, enemies, among other things, focus on reconstructing destroyed structures and use a larger pool of spells. Old bugs have also been fixed, and a full list of changes is available on the ModDB page.
- The modification can be ed for free, although it requires the original version of the game with the 1.06 update. Therefore, it is intended for those who own physical editions of the strategy, since the title is not currently available for digital distribution. However, the situation may change—the game has been submitted to the GOG Preservation Program and has already received over 50,000 votes from the community.
- The developer doesn't specify whether this is the final version of Middle-earth: Extended Edition. At the same time, he encourages reporting any comments or problems, suggesting that he doesn't intend to abandon his work anytime soon.
The Lord of the Rings Strategy: Battle for Middle-earth was released on December 6, 2004. The development was handled by EA Los Angeles studio, later known as Danger Close Games.
